Wyandotte County, located in the northeastern region of Kansas, was officially established in 1859. The county was named after the Wyandot tribe of Native Americans, who had been living in the region before the arrival of European settlers. Wyandotte County is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and its county seat and most populous city is Kansas City, Kansas.

The area was first explored by Europeans in the late 1600s and early 1700s when French fur traders and missionaries arrived. By the early 1800s, the region saw interactions, cooperation, and conflict between Native Americans and European settlers. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 spurred increased settlement in the region, and land disputes between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settler factions would later foreshadow the beginning of the American Civil War.

Throughout the latter half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, industry and infrastructure development fueled the growth of Wyandotte County. The areas near the city of Kansas City, Kansas became major railroad hubs, with the Kansas City Stockyards and meatpacking plants providing a significant source of employment.

Fun fact: Wyandotte County is home to the Kansas Speedway, a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) tri-oval race track which opened in 2001. The speedway hosts multiple NASCAR events annually and has become a popular entertainment destination, adding to the region's economic and cultural significance.
