Ballard County is located in the far western region of the great state of Kentucky in the United States. Established on February 15, 1842, the county is named after Bland Ballard, a celebrated Kentuckian who fought in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Indian Wars.

Originally a part of Hickman County, the land was settled in the early 1800s, with the town of Barlow becoming a significant trading hub during the late 1800s and early 1900s, due to its strategic location on the Ohio River.

Ballard County is steeped in rich history, with evidence of native tribes like the Mississippian Culture dating back thousands of years. The county has several such preserved sites, including Blue Spring Mounds and Wickliffe Mounds.

A fun fact about Ballard County is that it was originally home to Monkey's Eyebrow, an unincorporated community which got its name from the shape of its terrain resembling a monkey's eyebrow.
