It was formed from parts of Green and Warren counties and named "Barren" because the settlers noted the relative lack of trees and vegetation in the area. The county seat of Barren County is Glasgow, named after Glasgow, Scotland, which was founded in 1799.
In the early days of settlement, the county was primarily a hub for tobacco farming and cattle raising. As time went on, the economy shifted more towards providing support for various industries, including the production of agricultural products, timber, and manufacturing. The Barren River runs through the county, providing a valuable water source and giving the area a picturesque landscape.
