Barren County, located in the south-central part of the great state of Kentucky, was established in 1798. It was formed from parts of Green and Warren counties and named "Barren" because the settlers noted the relative lack of trees and vegetation in the area. The county seat of Barren County is Glasgow, named after Glasgow, Scotland, which was founded in 1799.

In the early days of settlement, the county was primarily a hub for tobacco farming and cattle raising. As time went on, the economy shifted more towards providing support for various industries, including the production of agricultural products, timber, and manufacturing. The Barren River runs through the county, providing a valuable water source and giving the area a picturesque landscape.

One fun fact about Barren County is that it is home to Mammoth Cave National Park, which boasts the world's longest known cave system. With more than 400 miles of explored passageways, this incredible natural wonder draws tourists from all around the world to explore its limestone labyrinths, underground rivers, and fascinating geological formations. The Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
