Bourbon County, located in the great state of Kentucky, has a rich historical background steeped in American heritage. Initially established as part of Virginia in 1785, Bourbon County was named in honor of the French Royal Family, the House of Bourbon, who had supported the American colonists during the Revolutionary War. When Kentucky became the 15th state in 1792, Bourbon County was re-designated as a part of the new state.

The county has played a key role in the development of the famous Kentucky Bourbon whiskey. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many settlers moved to the area to escape the over-cultivation of land in Virginia. With an abundance of limestone-filtered water and fertile soil, the region provided ideal conditions for growing corn and making whiskey. Over time, the local distillers developed a unique method of aging whiskey in charred oak barrels, which imparts the distinctively smooth and smoky flavor profile of Bourbon whiskey.

Although Bourbon County was once home to over 400 distilleries, Prohibition in the early 20th century caused many to close down. Today, the county remains an important center for the bourbon industry, with several distilleries still in operation.

A fun fact about Bourbon County is that it is the birthplace of renowned thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown in 1973, breaking multiple records in the process. The legacy of Secretariat lives on in the county, demonstrating the region's passion for both bourbon and horse racing.
