Bracken County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Kentucky, nestled along the Ohio River. The county, established on December 14, 1796, was named in honor of William Bracken, a frontiersman and military officer who contributed significantly to the early development of the region. Bracken County is the 23rd county formed in the state of Kentucky.

The area's rich history dates back to Native American settlements, with early European settlers arriving in the late 18th century. Augusta, the county seat and the largest city in Bracken County, has a deep history. Founded in 1797 by Philip Buckner, Augusta grew due to its strategic position along the Ohio River, which allowed for increased trade and economic development throughout the 19th century.

Agriculture played a crucial role in the economy of Bracken County, with tobacco being the primary crop. It was also home to different industries, such as milling, fabric production, and distilleries. Many of these industries made use of the Licking River, which runs through the county.

A fun fact about Bracken County is its relation to the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that assisted African American slaves in escaping to freedom. The John Rankin House in neighboring Ripley, Ohio, served as a beacon of freedom for countless slaves, many of whom began their journey in Bracken County. The house, now a National Historic Landmark, represents the spirit of abolitionism and the desire for freedom that has deep roots in this region of the USA.
