Bullitt County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky, south of downtown Louisville. It was officially founded on March 20, 1797, and named after Alexander Scott Bullitt, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky and was a major political figure in the early history of the state. Bullitt County initially covered a large area, but in the following years, parts of it were used to form several neighboring counties, reducing its size.

Early settlers in Bullitt County came from Virginia and Pennsylvania in the 1770s, attracted by fertile farmland and the navigable Salt River. One of the most important early industries was salt production, which was based around the area's natural salt licks. In the 19th century, the county served as a key transportation hub with the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike, which connected Louisville with Bardstown and Nashville, and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, which promoted trade and commerce.

As the county evolved, agriculture and limestone quarrying also became vital industries. The world's second-largest quarry of quality limestone can be found in Shepherdsville, the county seat.

One fun fact about Bullitt County is the existence of the famous Jim Beam American Stillhouse, located in Clermont. This distillery has been producing Kentucky's famous bourbon whiskey for over 200 years, and is one of the key attractions for tourists visiting the region. Additionally, the county is also known for its wine production; Forest Edge Winery and Wight-Meyer Vineyard & Winery are two of Bullitt County's popular wineries.
