Carlisle County is located in the far western part of the great state of Kentucky, within the Jackson Purchase region. Established on May 3, 1886, it was named in honor of John Griffin Carlisle, a prominent politician who served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury and Speaker of the House of Representatives. The county was carved out of the existing Ballard and Hickman counties. The county seat and largest city is Bardwell, which was founded in 1874 when the Paducah, Tennessee, and Alabama Railroad was extended through the region.

Notably, Carlisle County has played an important role in both the Civil War and railroad history. During the Civil War, Fort Jefferson, which was built in 1780 and now an expansive park, provided protection to early settlers in the region. The fort's earthwork remnants can still be seen around the park's playground area.

A fun fact about Carlisle County is that it is part of the Mississippi River's floodplain, which makes it rich in natural resources and wildlife. The nearby Columbus-Belmont State Park offers spectacular views of the Mississippi River, a Civil War museum, and campgrounds. Additionally, the Carlisle County area is known for its abundant deer population, providing ample opportunities for hunting and other outdoor activities.
