Cumberland County, located in the great state of Kentucky, was founded on December 14, 1798. It was named in honor of the Duke of Cumberland who had defeated the Scottish forces at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The county was formed from portions of Green County and is situated in the south-central part of the state, along the Tennessee border. The county seat is Burkesville, which was incorporated in 1846 and named after the area's first settler, Isaac Burkes.

Prior to European settlement, the land was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Chickasaw. The arrival of European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries led to a gradual displacement of these Native American tribes. Early settlers in Cumberland County were predominantly of Scottish, Irish, and English descent, who were drawn to the area due to its fertile land, which was ideal for farming and cattle raising.

Fun Fact: Cumberland County is home to the Cumberland River, which stretches for 688 miles and runs through parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. The river is named after the Duke of Cumberland and has been an essential transportation and economic resource for the region throughout its history. One of its main attractions is the Cumberland Falls, which is often called the "Niagara of the South" due to its size and beauty. The falls are a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists alike, offering hiking trails, beautiful scenic views, and even occasional moonbows, which are nighttime rainbows caused by the reflection of moonlight on the mist from the falls.
