Estill County, located in the great state of Kentucky, was officially established on February 25, 1808. It was named in honor of Captain James Estill, a pioneer, militia officer, and Indian fighter. The county is situated in the eastern part of the state and is part of the region known as the Bluegrass State.

Before its establishment, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Chickasaw. The first documented European explorer to pass through the area was Dr. Thomas Walker, a physician and surveyor, who traversed the region in 1750.

As European settlers began to move into the area in the late 18th century, they established small farming communities, primarily focused on tobacco and corn production. The growth of the county and its economy was aided by the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s.

Today, the county seat is Irvine, a city established in 1812 and named for William Irvine, an early settler and Revolutionary War officer. Estill County has a rich history of moonshining, and during the Prohibition era in the 1920s, many locals were involved in the illegal production and distribution of alcohol.

Fun Fact: Estill County also hosts the annual "Mountain Mushroom Festival," held in Irvine since 1991. This unique event celebrates the abundance of morel mushrooms found in the area and includes a variety of events and entertainment centered around mushrooms, such as cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, and a "Fungus 5K" race.
