Green County is located in the south-central region of the great state of Kentucky, United States. Established on December 20, 1792, it was named to honor General Nathanael Greene, a key Revolutionary War General who played a vital role in the war for independence. The county originally encompassed parts of modern-day Taylor, Metcalfe, Hart, and Adair Counties before those counties were separately formed.

The county seat, Greensburg, was founded by Col. William Montgomery James in 1794 and incorporated in 1799. Greensburg has a rich history and is home to several historic buildings, including the Old Courthouse, which is considered one of the oldest courthouses still in use west of the Allegheny Mountains.

Green County has had its share of notable residents, including Jane Todd Crawford, a pioneer known for her bravery in undergoing a major surgical procedure without anesthesia in 1809. Crawford willingly agreed to undergo the first successful removal of an ovarian tumor by Dr. Ephraim McDowell, a groundbreaking achievement that paved the way for modern abdominal surgeries.

A fun fact about this region is that the Green River, which runs through Green County, has been designated as a Kentucky Wild River. Stretching over 37 miles, the Green River is known for its beautiful scenery, unique plant species, and diverse wildlife, making it an attractive destination for nature enthusiasts and outdoor recreation.
