Jefferson County, located in the great state of Kentucky, was founded in 1780 and is named after the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Situated on the north-central border of Kentucky, the county consists of an area of approximately 398 square miles. With Louisville as its county seat, Jefferson County is the most populous county in the state, with a population of approximately 767,000, as of 2019.

The region's historical significance is rooted in the establishment of the city of Louisville in 1778, which was named in honor of King Louis XVI of France, as a recognition of his support during the American Revolutionary War. Jefferson County played a crucial role in the Civil War, where it remained with the Union, despite Kentucky's official neutral stance, and Louisville functioned as a crucial supply and logistics center.

A notable landmark in the county is the renowned Churchill Downs horse racing track, which was established in 1875. Churchill Downs has been home to the prestigious Kentucky Derby, the oldest continuously-running sports event in the United States, held annually on the first Saturday in May since its inception.

An interesting fun fact about Jefferson County is that it was the birthplace of the famous American journalist and writer Hunter S. Thompson, who pioneered the Gonzo journalism movement.
