Johnson County, located in the great state of Kentucky, was established on February 24, 1843. It was formed from parts of Floyd, Lawrence, and Morgan Counties. The county is named in honor of Richard Mentor Johnson, who served as the ninth Vice President of the United States under President Martin Van Buren (1837-1841). Johnson County covers an area of approximately 264 square miles and is situated in the eastern part of Kentucky.

The region was initially occupied by Native American tribes before European settlers arrived in the 18th century. The county seat, Paintsville, was founded in 1834 and officially incorporated in 1843. Paintsville's establishment was greatly influenced by its location along the Big Sandy River, which was a major transportation route during that time. The river facilitated trade and movement through the region, helping Johnson County develop an economy based on agriculture, timber, and eventually coal mining.

One fun fact about Johnson County is its connection to the world of music. The county is the birthplace of several notable country music artists, including Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn, and Crystal Gayle. The local culture and traditions of the area have had a significant influence on the music produced by these artists, further establishing Johnson County's role in the rich history of American music.
