Laurel County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Kentucky, was established on December 21, 1825. The county was named in honor of the American mountain laurel, the beautiful evergreen shrub common to the area. The county seat is London, a city which was laid out and founded in 1826.

Laurel County has a rich history, from its early settlement by pioneer families to its involvement in the Civil War. The Battle of Camp Wildcat, one of the first engagements of the Civil War in Kentucky, took place in Laurel County on October 21, 1861. Union forces successfully repelled an offensive by Confederate troops, making it one of the early Union victories in the war.

Laurel County is also known for its beautiful natural attractions, including the Daniel Boone National Forest, Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park, and the historic wilderness road that runs through the county. The scenic beauty and rich history make Laurel County a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.

One fun fact about Laurel County is that it hosts the annual World Chicken Festival. This event is held every September in London, Kentucky, to honor Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). The festival features live music, parade, rides, games, arts and crafts, and, of course, delicious fried chicken. It also includes the world's largest stainless-steel skillet, spanning 10 feet in diameter, used for frying the chicken during the festivities.
