Letcher County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Kentucky. Established on March 23, 1842, it was carved out of portions of Perry and Harlan Counties. The county was named in honor of Kentucky's 15th Governor, Robert P. Letcher. Spanning an area of 339 square miles, Letcher County is home to approximately 23,000 residents.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county experienced rapid industrial development due to the growth of the coal mining industry. Multiple railroad lines, including the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, were built in the area, providing transportation for the booming coal industry. Despite the challenges faced by mining over the last century, coal production remains a significant contributor to Letcher County's economy.

One interesting fact about Letcher County is that it is home to over a hundred miles of beautiful trails and scenic views, including the Pine Mountain Trail State Park.
