Lyon County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Kentucky, USA. It was formed on February 14, 1854, from parts of Caldwell County and named in honor of Chittenden Lyon, a Kentucky congressman and military officer. The county seat and largest city is Eddyville, which was founded in 1798 prior to the creation of the county itself.

The history of the region can be traced much further back before the establishment of the county when it was the homeland of the Native American tribes, specifically the Chickasaw and the Shawnee.

Lyon County is known for its abundant water resources, with Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley being the two major lakes in the region, both created by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1944 and the Cumberland River Hydroelectric Project in 1966, respectively. These lakes provide ample opportunity for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.

The county is also rich in terms of its natural, historical, and cultural attractions. One of the more notable sites is Mineral Mound State Park, a historic property initially owned by the pioneer surveyor, William Kelly. In 1840, a gold rush occurred in the region when gold was discovered at a site that is now part of Mineral Mound State Park.

A fun fact about Lyon County is that the city of Kuttawa, located in the county, is said to be named after a Chickasaw word, which means "Beautiful." It is said to have been a favorite hunting ground for the Chickasaw people before European-American settlers arrived.
