.Madison County is located in the heart of the great state of Kentucky and is named in honor of the fourth President of the United States, James Madison. Established on December 14, 1785, it was among the first few handful of counties formed in Kentucky just after it became the 15th state to join the Union in 1792. Madison County is part of the Bluegrass Region, which is characterized by its fertile soil and prevalent limestone deposits.
The county seat, Richmond, was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller, a Revolutionary War soldier. The county has a rich history spanning back to its early Native American settlements, especially due to the presence of Fort Boonesborough, which was established by the famous American pioneer, Daniel Boone. The fort and its surrounding settlement played a significant role in the colonization and development of the western frontier during the late 18th century.
