Magoffin County, nestled within the great state of Kentucky, was established in 1860 and named after Governor Beriah Magoffin, who served as the 21st governor of Kentucky from 1859 to 1862. The county is located in the Appalachian region of the Eastern United States, known for its rich coal deposits and abundant natural beauty. Salyersville serves as the county seat, and the region has a total area of about 309 square miles.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Magoffin County's economy relied heavily on coal mining and timber extraction. With the decline of these industries, the county faced economic challenges, and it transitioned toward agriculture, tourism, and small businesses as alternative sources of income.

A fun fact about Magoffin County is that it is home to the notable Dawkins Line Rail Trail. The trail is an 18-mile-long multi-use rail trail that was developed after the rail line was abandoned in 2004. Encompassing beautiful scenery and small towns, the Dawkins Line Rail Trail offers a unique opportunity for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders to enjoy the picturesque countryside of Magoffin County and surrounding areas.
