Marshall County is located in the great state of Kentucky, within the United States. It was formed on June 23, 1842, and named in honor of Chief Justice John Marshall, who served on the Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. The county seat is Benton, which was also established as a town in 1842.

The area that now comprises Marshall County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes. European settlers, mostly from North Carolina and Virginia, began to arrive in the late 1700s and early 1800s. These settlers primarily established small farming communities in the region. During its early history, Marshall County was involved in various land disputes and lawsuits, which continued until 1842 when it became its own distinct county.

Agriculture has played a significant role in the county's history, with tobacco and corn being the primary crops. In addition to agriculture, mining, and industry have also been important, with fluorspar mining being prominent in the early 20th century.

One fun fact about Marshall County is that Kentucky Dam is located in this region. Completed in 1944, the dam created the largest man-made lake in the Eastern United States, Kentucky Lake. This lake has since become a popular tourist destination for boating, fishing, and various water sports, contributing to the local economy and providing year-round outdoor recreation opportunities.
