McCracken County, Kentucky
.McCracken County is located in the southwestern region of Kentucky, covering an area of 268 square miles. It was founded on January 15, 1825, and named in honor of Captain Virgil McCracken of the War of 1812, who was killed during the Battle of Frenchtown. Paducah serves as the county seat and also is the largest city within the county.
Originally, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes. In the early 19th century, the land was settled by pioneers who were attracted to the fertile soil and natural resources of the region. The establishment of the city of Paducah in 1830 contributed to the growth of the county, as steamboats began to utilize the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers to transport goods and people.
The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s led to further development of the county, and Paducah served as a strategic location during the Civil War. The city was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces at different times due to the strategic importance of controlling railway and river access points.
Throughout the 20th century, McCracken County continued to develop economically and industrially, with the establishment of various industries, such as manufacturing, and the establishment of the Barkley Regional Airport in 1942, which further connected the region to the rest of the country.
A fun fact about McCracken County is that it is home to the National Quilt Museum, which celebrates America's rich quilting history and showcases a diverse collection of award-winning contemporary quilts. The museum attracts art enthusiasts to the region and is considered one of the top quilting events in the world.
