.McCreary County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Kentucky and was established on March 12, 1912. The county is named in honor of James B. McCreary, who served as the Governor of Kentucky twice (from 1875 to 1879 and from 1911 to 1915). McCreary County has a rich and diverse history, with its lands once inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee, Shawnee, and Creek.
The area was settled by European immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries, who were attracted by the fertile lands and abundant natural resources. The region's economy was primarily based on agriculture, timber, and coal mining. The lumber and coal industries rose in prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to a population boom as people flocked to the region for employment in these industries. However, as these industries experienced a decline, so did the prosperity of McCreary County.
Today, McCreary County is well-known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. The county lies within the biodiverse Cumberland Plateau, and it contains parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.

This waterfall, located within the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, spans 125 feet in width and has a 68-foot drop. Cumberland Falls is one of the few places in the western hemisphere where you can witness a "moonbow," a unique natural phenomenon that occurs when the light of the full moon produces a rainbow-like effect in the spray of the waterfall.
