McLean County is located in the western part of Kentucky and was founded on January 28, 1854. It was named in honor of Alney McLean, an American lawyer, soldier and statesman who served as the first United States Representative from Kentucky's 2nd congressional district. The county's total area spans approximately 256 square miles, and its county seat is Calhoun.

Before the formation of McLean County, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and Cherokee. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, European settlers, primarily of Scots-Irish descent, began to migrate to the area. The county was created from portions of surrounding counties, such as Daviess, Ohio, and Muhlenberg Counties.

The economy in McLean County has historically been driven by agriculture, primarily focusing on the production of tobacco, corn, and soybeans. Coal mining and manufacturing also played significant roles in the region's economic development.

One fun fact about McLean County is that it is home to the world's largest sassafras tree, which stands at a height of 100 feet with a circumference of over 21 feet. This remarkable tree, known as the "Champion Sassafras Tree," is estimated to be over 300 years old and can be found in the small community of Island, Kentucky.
