Monroe County is located in the great state of Kentucky within the United States of America. Established on January 20, 1820, Monroe County was named in honor of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. The county was formed from parts of Barren and Cumberland counties, and its county seat is Tompkinsville.

Throughout its history, Monroe County has predominantly focused on agriculture, with tobacco and livestock serving as important economic drivers. The county is also rich in natural resources, including the Cumberland River, which served as an essential transportation route during the early days of local settlements.

Monroe County is home to a notable geographic feature called the Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site, where the Mill Creek Baptist Church was established in 1801. This church site includes the oldest freestanding log meeting house in the state, making it an important landmark in Kentucky's history of religious freedom.

A fun fact about Monroe County is that it hosts the annual Watermelon Festival, which has taken place since the 1980s. The festival celebrates the local culture and agricultural heritage of the region, and provides an opportunity for families to come together to enjoy live music, food, arts and crafts, and, of course, the delicious watermelon.
