Morgan County is located in the Eastern Coalfield region of the great state of Kentucky, USA. Established in 1822, the county was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a distinguished officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is West Liberty, which was initially incorporated in 1823 and has a rich history of its own.

Morgan County's economy was historically driven by agriculture, particularly corn, tobacco, and hay production. However, as with the majority of the Eastern Coalfield region, coal mining became a significant industry in the county, particularly in the years following World War I. Despite this, the region still maintains its agricultural roots, with a mix of small farms and other local businesses contributing to its economic landscape.

A significant event in Morgan County history occurred in March 2012, when the area was struck by a devastating EF3 tornado, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and widespread damage to the county seat of West Liberty and its surrounding communities. The resilient spirit of the people of Morgan County shone through in the aftermath of this disaster, with tremendous efforts put forth for rebuilding and restoring the community.

A fun fact about Morgan County is its status as the "Gateway to the Elk Viewing Area" in Eastern Kentucky. With the success of the elk restoration programs, the county has become a destination for wildlife enthusiasts who come to observe and photograph these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

The region is also home to the annual Morgan County Sorghum Festival, showcasing the locally produced sweet sorghum and celebrating the county's rich agricultural heritage with music, crafts, and demonstrations of traditional sorghum making.
