Muhlenberg County is located in the western part of the great state of Kentucky. The county was founded in 1798 and was named in honor of General Peter Muhlenberg, a distinguished military leader, and clergyman during the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is Greenville.

The region was historically known for its lush forests and rich coal mines, which contributed significantly to the area's development and economy. The rural county developed primarily around agriculture, timber, and coal mining. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the coal industry was especially booming, with numerous mines operating throughout Muhlenberg County.
