Oldham County is located in the north-central part of the great state of Kentucky, and was established on December 15, 1823. It was named after Colonel William Oldham, a Revolutionary War officer and early Kentucky legislator. The county seat, La Grange, was founded in 1827 and was named after Marquis de Lafayette's French estate, Chteau de la Grange-Bleneau.

The history of Oldham County is marked by its agricultural roots and the development of the railroad industry. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the county was known for its fertile farmland and thriving agricultural businesses, including tobacco, dairy, and horse breeding. In the mid-1800s, the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Railroad was constructed through Oldham County, helping to promote industry and trade.

Throughout its history, Oldham County has had a strong commitment to education. The first schools were one-room log cabin structures, and over time, schools and educational institutions grew to accommodate the growing population.
