Owsley County is located in the eastern portion of the great state of Kentucky. It was established on January 23, 1843, from portions of Clay, Breathitt, and Estill counties. The county was named in honor of William Owsley, a Kentucky Governor who served from 1844 to 1848. Its county seat is Booneville.

The region was initially settled by European Americans in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, attracted by its fertile land, abundant natural resources, and picturesque terrain. Owsley County is part of the Pottsville Escarpment, which plays a significant role in making the area rich in coal, natural gas, and oil. Its economy historically relied upon these natural resources, as well as timber and agriculture (primarily tobacco).

Nestled within the Appalachian Mountains, Owsley County boasts a diverse and vibrant natural environment. One unique aspect of the county is its location in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, a nearly 2.1 million-acre protected forest reserve named after the famous American pioneer and explorer. The forest provides opportunities for hiking, camping, hunting, and other outdoor recreation activities, making it a fun destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

Fun fact: Owsley County is home to the "Smallest Church in the 48 States," which is known as the Cane Ridge Meeting House. Measuring just 8 feet by 12 feet, this tiny church has just enough space for a pulpit, bench, and seating for about six people. It was constructed in the mid-20th century and has been a quirky tourist attraction ever since.
