Perry County, located in the great state of Kentucky, was established in 1820 and named after the War of 1812 hero, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The county is part of the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield region, spanning approximately 343 square miles. It is situated within the lush and rugged terrain of the Appalachian Mountains and is home to the city of Hazard, which serves as the county seat.

In the 1800s, the region saw an influx of settlers, many of whom were involved in the timber and coal industries. Coal mining has played a significant role in the county's economic development, with industrial growth peaking in the early to mid-20th century.

With regards to education, the county established its first public school in 1841, and by the early 20th century, it was home to several schools and colleges, including the now-famous Hazard Community and Technical College.

One interesting fun fact about Perry County is that it is known as "Home of the Black Gold," as it is abundantly rich in coal deposits. This nickname pays homage to the significant role coal has played in shaping the county's economy, culture, and history.
