Rowan County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Kentucky and was established on May 15, 1856. It is named after John Rowan, a prominent Kentucky judge, U.S. Congressman, and U.S. Senator. The county was formed from parts of Fleming and Morgan Counties, and its county seat is Morehead.

A significant historical event in Rowan County was the Rowan County War, which took place from 1884 until 1887. The war was a series of bloody feuds and violent incidents between the Martin and Tolliver families. The intervention of Kentucky Governor Simon Bolivar Buckner ultimately ended the conflict, and the leaders from both families were either imprisoned or killed.

Rowan County is renowned for its education, as it is home to Morehead State University, which was established in 1887, initially as a private institution called Morehead Normal School. It became a public institution in 1922 and continued to grow over the years, offering diverse academic fields and contributing to the development of the region.

One fun fact about this region is that Rowan County is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, which was established in 1937 and originally named Cumberland National Forest, but was later renamed in 1966 to honor the legendary pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone. The forest provides abundant opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, camping, and fishing.
