Shelby County, located in Kentucky's Bluegrass Region, was established in 1792 and named after Isaac Shelby, the state's first Governor. Covering an area of 386 square miles, it is situated between the state's two largest cities, Louisville and Lexington.

Shelby County was originally part of Jefferson County, but as more settlers moved into the fertile region, the need arose for a new county. Its fertile land was perfect for farming, and the region gained prominence for producing high-quality horses and livestock, as well as its agricultural output of corn, wheat, and tobacco.

The county seat is Shelbyville, founded in 1792 by William Shannon and named after the county itself. The city prospered along with the county, serving as a hub for trade, commerce, and industry.

Throughout its history, Shelby County has been known for its picturesque landscapes, rich farmlands, and strong agricultural community. The presence of numerous horse farms has also led to the county's nickname, "The American Saddlebred Capital of the World."

A fun fact about Shelby County is that it hosts the annual Shelbyville Horse Show, a prestigious event that attracts horse enthusiasts from across the nation to showcase their American Saddlebred horses. This event contributes to the county's reputation as a renowned center for equestrian culture and tradition.
