Whitley County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Kentucky, was established on January 17, 1818, and named after Colonel William Whitley, a renowned pioneer, and Indian fighter. The county seat is Williamsburg, which was also formed in 1818 and named in honor of Colonel Whitley.

Whitley County was initially part of Knox County before separating as its own county. The region was mainly settled by Virginians and North Carolinians who traveled through the Cumberland Gap, a significant passageway through the Appalachian Mountains. The region's economy was originally based on agriculture and livestock farming.

As the years progressed, industries such as coal mining and lumber became crucial in shaping Whitley County's development. Today, the manufacturing sector also plays a significant role in the local economy.

One fun fact about Whitley County is that Cumberland Falls, commonly referred to as "The Niagara of the South," is located within the county. Cumberland Falls is known for its rare and captivating natural phenomenon called a "moonbow" a night-time rainbow created by the mist from the waterfall reflecting the light of a full moon. The Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is a popular tourist destination and one of the few locations worldwide where a predictable moonbow can be seen.
