Cameron Parish, located in the southwest corner of Louisiana, is the largest parish in the state, covering an area of 1,932 square miles. It was established on January 29, 1870, and was named in honor of Simon Cameron, a prominent politician from Pennsylvania, who served as Secretary of War during Abraham Lincoln's administration. The parish is bordered by Texas to the west, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and the Calcasieu River to the east, making it a geographically diverse area with marshes, bayous, and beaches.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the economy of Cameron Parish was based primarily on agriculture, cattle ranching, and fishing. The area also played a significant role in the burgeoning oil and natural gas industries in the 20th century. The parish is home to the vast Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1914 and has served as a research and conservation site for waterfowl and other wildlife. The refuge was created through the donation of land by John D. Rockefeller, a wealthy business magnate, and philanthropist.

One fun fact about Cameron Parish is that it is home to the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, which is the largest coastal marsh refuge on the Gulf of Mexico. This refuge covers over 124,511 acres and provides critical habitat for hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds, as well as other wildlife, such as alligators, raccoons, and rabbits. The refuge offers opportunities for visitors to engage in various recreational activities, including wildlife observation, photography, and fishing.
