De Soto Parish, located in the great state of Louisiana, was established on April 1, 1843. The parish was named in honor of Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first European expedition deep into the United States territory. De Soto Parish is part of the Louisiana-Arkansas border region, and its parish seat is the town of Mansfield.

Prior to European settlement, the region was home to various Native American tribes, including the Caddo Indians. In the early 19th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area, and it was incorporated as a parish in order to accommodate the growing population. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Mansfield was fought in the parish in 1864, a Confederate victory that marked the high point of their short-lived success in the Red River Campaign.

One fun fact about De Soto Parish is its connection to the legend of Bonnie and Clyde. The infamous duo were ambushed and killed on May 23, 1934, in Bienville Parish, but their bodies were brought to Conger's Funeral Home in the town of Arcadia, located just across the Bienville Parish line in De Soto Parish, for embalming and preparation for funeral services.
