Grant Parish is located in the central region of the great state of Louisiana, with Colfax as its parish seat. The parish was founded on July 7, 1869, during the Reconstruction Era, following the end of the American Civil War. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant, a Union General who later became the 18th President of the United States.

Grant Parish played an interesting role in the state's political history, being split into two opposing sides during the reconstruction period. The Red River served as a natural boundary, dividing the pro-Union regions to the south and Confederate regions to the north.

The area's economy primarily relied on agriculture, and the fertile land supported cotton and other crops. The timber industry also played an important role as vast pine forests covered the area.

A notable event in Grant Parish's history is the Colfax Massacre, which occurred on April 13, 1873. The incident involved white supremacist militias clashing with African American freedmen, resulting in the deaths of at least 62 African American men. This event marked a turning point in Reconstruction politics and further solidified racial divisions within the region.

Fun Fact: Grant Parish is home to Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana's only national forest, which covers over 600,000 acres, offering residents and visitors countless opportunities for outdoor recreational activities like hiking, fishing, and camping.
