Morehouse Parish is located in northeastern Louisiana and was established on March 25, 1844. The region was named after the prominent Louisiana transplant Abraham Morehouse, who arrived from New York in 1798 and acquired a large tract of land in the Ouachita River Valley. The parish has an area of 805 square miles, and its parish seat is the city of Bastrop. Morehouse Parish is made up of six municipalities, including Bastrop, Bonita, Collinston, Mer Rouge, Oak Ridge, and Pioneer.

During its early history, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Caddo and Chickasaw, prior to European settlement. Black bear, deer, and buffalo were abundant in the region and attracted fur traders and hunters creating a trading network with the native population.

Once settled by Europeans, the predominant agricultural activities in Morehouse Parish included cotton and corn farming, as well as livestock raising. In addition, timber from the region's vast forests played a crucial role in the economic development of the parish. The presence of the Ouachita River and Bayou Bartholomew made it a hub for transportation, providing routes for exporting the region's agricultural products and lumber.

One fun fact about Morehouse Parish is that a sizable part of the Bayou Bartholomew, the longest bayou in the world, stretches across the parish. This bayou is approximately 375 miles long, spans two states (Louisiana and Arkansas), and provides habitat for over 100 fish species and numerous other wildlife species. Bayou Bartholomew is considered one of the most culturally and historically significant bayous in the region, influencing the lives and development of its people for centuries.
