Rapides Parish is located in the central part of the great state of Louisiana. It was established on March 31, 1807, as one of the original 19 parishes created after the US acquired the Louisiana Purchase. The name "Rapides" is derived from the French word for "rapids" and signifies the region's initial French influence. The parish seat is in the city of Alexandria, which lies at the geographic center of Louisiana.

Rapides Parish has a rich history, with indigenous peoples having lived in the area for thousands of years prior to European settlement. In the early 18th century, a French trader named Louis Juchereau de St. Denis established a trading post in the area, creating the first connection between the French colonies of Louisiana and Texas.

During the Civil War, Central Louisiana, including the region now known as Rapides Parish, was the site of numerous conflicts. In 1864, Confederate General Richard Taylor and Union General Nathaniel Banks faced off in the Battle of Mansura, which culminated in the Battle of Yellow Bayou. This marked the end of the Red River Campaign and ultimately contributed to the Union victory in the war.

Rapides Parish experienced significant growth and development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The arrival of the railroad in Alexandria in 1885 spurred economic growth, connecting the parish's rich timber and agricultural resources with national and international markets.

One fun fact about Rapides Parish is that it is home to a remarkable prehistoric earthwork, the Marksville Site. This archaeological site dates back to approximately 50 BCE and reflects the early Marksville culture, which had connections to the Hopewell tradition. The site consists of six conical mounds and one rectangular platform mound, providing insights into the ceremonies, rituals, and other cultural activities of the ancient people who lived in Rapides Parish.
