Red River Parish is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Louisiana. Established on March 2, 1871, it was formed from parts of four other parishes: Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, and Natchitoches. The parish was named after the Red River, a significant waterway that runs through the region and serves as a tributary of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers.

The history of Red River Parish can be traced back to the early 18th century when European settlers, predominantly French, began to arrive in the area. The region was part of French Louisiana until it was transferred to Spanish control in 1762. The Spanish governed the territory until 1800 when it was returned to France. However, in 1803, the United States acquired the vast Louisiana Territory through the Louisiana Purchase, leading to American settlement in present-day Red River Parish.

During the 1800s, Red River Parish was primarily an agricultural area focusing on cotton and corn production. The location of the Red River made it a vital transportation route for steamboats, facilitating trade and development throughout the region.

A fun fact about Red River Parish is that Coushatta, the parish seat, is home to the oldest working courthouse in Louisiana. The Red River Parish Courthouse, built in 1884, is a fine example of Romanesque architecture and serves as a historical landmark in the region.
