Saint Bernard Parish, located in the great state of Louisiana, has a rich and storied history dating back to the 18th century. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area and lies in the southeastern region of the state, just east of the Mississippi River. The parish was originally named after the patron saint of mountain travelers, Saint Bernard de Menthon. Its unique history is shaped by a diverse blend of cultures, including French, Spanish, African, Irish, and Italian settlers throughout the years.

In 1768, a group of Canary Islanders, also known as Islenos, was sponsored by the Spanish government to settle in the region, in hopes of defending New Orleans from British invasion. They established a community called San Bernardo, after which the parish was named. Over time, the Isleno community grew and contributed to the cultural richness of the region.

Saint Bernard Parish is also historically significant for its role in the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans, the final battle of the war, took place nearby in the neighboring Orleans Parish. General Andrew Jackson and his troops, including the Baratarians, led by the famous pirate Jean Lafitte, defended New Orleans from the British invasion. The Chalmette Battlefield, located within the parish, is now part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and serves as a testament to this pivotal moment in American history.

A fun fact about Saint Bernard Parish is that it hosts the annual Islenos Fiesta, a celebration of the region's cultural heritage, showcasing traditional customs, arts, crafts, and cuisine from the Canary Islands. This popular event attracts visitors from across the Gulf region and highlights the unique blend of cultures that make Saint Bernard Parish such a fascinating and historically significant part of Louisiana.
