Tensas Parish is located in the northeastern region of the state of Louisiana, in the Mississippi Delta. Established on March 17, 1843, the parish was created from the southern part of Concordia Parish and the northern part of Madison Parish. It is named after the Tensas, also known as the Taensa or Avoyel-Taensa, a Native American tribe that lived in the area.

The region was mainly inhabited by indigenous peoples until the arrival of European settlers in the late 17th century. The first Europeans to travel through the area were French explorers, led by Sieur de La Salle in 1682, who claimed the land for France. After the French and Indian War in 1763, Tensas Parish was transferred to Spain, and then returned to French rule under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800.

In 1803, the United States acquired the territory from France as a part of the Louisiana Purchase. Over the next several decades, the area's fertile soil attracted farmers and developers, leading to the influx of settlers from different parts of the United States. Cotton plantations became the main economic driver, and the Mississippi River served as a critical transportation route for exporting the crops.

The Civil War had a significant impact on Tensas Parish, which was a major battleground due to its location along the Mississippi River. After the war, the region's economy shifted to sharecropping and tenant farming.

Today, Tensas Parish offers various recreational and historical attractions, reflecting the unique cultural and natural heritage of the area. One fun fact about the region is that it is home to the Winter Quarters State Historic Site, which is a restored plantation showcasing the history of cotton farming and the challenges faced by planters during the annual flood season. The site offers a glimpse into the lives of both plantation owners and enslaved individuals during the Antebellum Era.
