Vernon Parish, located in the great state of Louisiana, has a rich history that dates back to its formation on March 30, 1871. The parish, named in honor of Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate, is situated in the western part of the state and covers an area of approximately 1,341 square miles. Leesville serves as the parish seat, boasting a distinct history of its own.

Before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes such as the Caddo, Choctaw, and Kisatchie inhabited the region. Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to venture into the area in the 1500s, followed by French explorers in the early 1700s. The region underwent several territorial changes, being ruled by the French, Spanish, and then the French again, before becoming part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

During the 1800s, Vernon Parish experienced an economic boom due to its booming timber, agricultural, and mineral industries. The town of Leesville, founded in 1871, became an important center for logging and trade during this time. The establishment of Fort Polk in 1941 solidified Vernon Parish's military significance as well. Named after the Confederate General Leonidas Polk, the fort has played a prominent role throughout various military conflicts, including World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.

A fun fact about Vernon Parish is that it is known as the "Heart of the Hidden World" due to its vast outdoor recreational opportunities. The pristine Kisatchie National Forest, which spans over 604,000 acres, sits within the parish boundaries and offers visitors an array of activities, such as camping, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

In summary, Vernon Parish, with its rich history, diverse cultural influences, and vast recreational opportunities, represents a unique part of Louisiana's story. The region boasts a strong military presence through Fort Polk and offers residents and visitors an unparalleled experience of nature through its spectacular Kisatchie National Forest.
