West Baton Rouge Parish is located in the southeastern region of Louisiana and is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. It was established in 1807, making it one of the oldest parishes in the state. The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Bayougoula and Houma, before European settlers arrived. Throughout its history, the combination of fertile soil and proximity to the Mississippi River allowed West Baton Rouge Parish to prosper.

Its early economy was primarily based on agriculture, with plantations growing cash crops like sugarcane, cotton, and indigo. During the 19th century, this area was part of the United States' Antebellum South, where enslaved African Americans were forced to work under brutal conditions on these plantations. Following the Civil War, freed African Americans began to settle in newly established communities within the parish, making West Baton Rouge a significant place for African American history in Louisiana.

Today, the West Baton Rouge Parish remains rooted in its agricultural heritage, but it has also diversified its economy with thriving petroleum, petrochemical, and shipping industries. The parish offers some popular tourist attractions, including the West Baton Rouge Museum, which preserves its history and culture.

Fun fact: West Baton Rouge is home to the "Old Ferry Landing Site," which once connected the community to the Louisiana State Capitol on the east bank of the Mississippi River, and played an important role in travel and commerce during the early 20th century.
