Barnstable County is located on Cape Cod in the southeastern part of Massachusetts. Established in 1685, it was named after Barnstaple, a town in Devon, England. The county covered the entirety of Cape Cod until 1818 when Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket were moved to Dukes County.

Barnstable County has a rich history that includes early Native American settlements, European colonization, and the development of the maritime industry. Before European colonization, the area was inhabited by the Wampanoag tribe. In 1620, the Pilgrims arrived at the nearby Plymouth Colony, and within decades, European settlers began to expand into the Cape Cod area.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Barnstable County was known for its fishing, whaling, and shipping industries. The region was a major center for shipbuilding and commerce, with many Cape Cod captains becoming successful merchants and sea captains. This period of prosperity led to the construction of many historic homes in the county.

Today, Barnstable County is a popular tourist destination renowned for its beautiful beaches, quaint villages, and rich cultural heritage. One fun fact about Barnstable County is that it is home to the world-renowned Cape Cod Potato Chips, which first started in Hyannis, one of the seven villages of Barnstable, in 1980. The facility still operates in Hyannis and offers free tours to visitors where they can watch the chips being made and learn about the company's history.
