Dukes County, located in the great state of Massachusetts, is a beautiful and historically significant area composed of Martha's Vineyard island and the Elizabeth Islands. Established in 1695, the county was named in honor of the Duke of York, later known as James II, and James, Duke of Monmouth. Originally part of the New York colony, the area was transferred to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the late 17th century.
Martha's Vineyard, the largest island in Dukes County, was discovered by English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602.
