Dukes County, located in the great state of Massachusetts, is a beautiful and historically significant area composed of Martha's Vineyard island and the Elizabeth Islands. Established in 1695, the county was named in honor of the Duke of York, later known as James II, and James, Duke of Monmouth. Originally part of the New York colony, the area was transferred to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the late 17th century.

Martha's Vineyard, the largest island in Dukes County, was discovered by English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602. The first English settlement on the island was established in 1642, and the island quickly became a center for agriculture, fishing, and whaling. In the early 19th century, Martha's Vineyard gained prominence as a popular summer resort for wealthy vacationers, a distinction it still holds today.

The Elizabeth Islands make up the rest of Dukes County, and they are a series of small islands extending southwest from Cape Cod. Named after Queen Elizabeth I, the islands were purchased by Massachusetts settler Thomas Mayhew in 1641.

A fun fact about Dukes County is that it is home to the arcade game "Penny Pitch," which is thought to be the oldest continuously operating arcade game in the United States. It can be found at the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, which dates back to 1876 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
