The largest city and the county seat is Boston, the capital of Massachusetts and one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the United States.

As an integral part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Suffolk County was home to several key events during the early stages of the American Revolution. The infamous Boston Tea Party in 1773 and the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, which marked the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, took place in the Suffolk County region.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Suffolk County flourished as an important center for industry and trade. Its robust seaport facilitated international commerce and contributed to the growth of the city of Boston. Prominent landmarks such as the Massachusetts State House, Faneuil Hall, and the Old North Church are located in Suffolk County.
