Anne Arundel County, named after Lady Anne Arundell, is located in the great state of Maryland. Lady Anne Arundell was a member of the renowned Arundel family in the English county of Sussex and the wife of Cecilius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, who founded the colony of Maryland. Established in 1650, Anne Arundel County was one of the original 23 counties in Maryland.

With an approximate population of 579,234 as of 2020, the county seat is Annapolis, also known as Maryland's capital city. Annapolis is home to the United States Naval Academy, established in 1845, and St. John's College, founded in 1696, the third oldest college in the United States.

Geographically, Anne Arundel County is centrally located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains, encompassing 588 square miles of land and water. The region is highly diverse, featuring the Chesapeake Bay coastline, wooded areas, urban communities, and rural farmland.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the area played a crucial role in U.S. history. Key historical events, such as the battle at Fort McHenry, where Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner," occurred near Anne Arundel County. The county also witnessed the landing of Kunte Kinte at the Annapolis City Dock (now known as Market Slip) in 1767; this story later served as the inspiration for Alex Haley's novel "Roots."

Fun fact: As the home of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis at Anne Arundel County is often called the "Sailing Capital of the United States." Sailboat racing is a popular pastime in the county, with Annapolis hosting various events throughout the year, including the annual Annapolis-to-Newport yacht race.
