The Maryland state quarter was created by Joel Iskowitz and was released in October 2000 as part of the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. The design features the Maryland state flag, the Calvert family coat of arms, a sailing ship, and the state motto, "Fatti Maschii Parole Femine", which translates to "Manly deeds, womanly words". The symbols represent the maritime history of Maryland, the state's role in the American Revolution, and the state's commitment to religious tolerance. The reverse of the quarter features a red-winged blackbird, a symbol of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The Maryland National Park quarter is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a series of 56 circulating commemorative coins released by the United States Mint from 2010-2021. The Maryland National Park quarter was released on November 15, 2021 and features the Maryland state quarter design on the reverse side. The design depicts the Maryland state bird, the Baltimore oriole, perched atop an oak tree, flanked by a banner with Maryland's state motto, "Fatti Maschii, Parole Femine", which translates to "Manly Deeds, Womanly Words". The design also includes the state's nickname, "The Old Line State", and the year of issuance. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

The Maryland National Park quarter honors the Catoctin Mountain Park, which is located in Frederick County, Maryland. Established in 1936, this park was one of the first of its kind, and has been home to several important historical events, including the Camp David Peace Accords in 1978. This park also provides visitors with a variety of recreational activities, such as camping, fishing, and hiking. The Maryland National Park quarter was designed by Donna Weaver and was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was created to honor the country's national parks, monuments, and other sites of historical importance. Each state, as well as the District of Columbia and the five US territories, were given the opportunity to have a design featured on the reverse side of the quarter. The Maryland National Park quarter is a symbol of the importance of preserving the state's natural beauty and history for future generations.
