Androscoggin County, located in the great state of Maine, has a rich historical background. Established on March 18, 1854, from parts of Cumberland, Kennebec, Lincoln, and Oxford Counties, it is situated in the southern central part of the state, with the Androscoggin River running through it.

Before European settlers arrived in the 17th century, the Androscoggin River valley was primarily inhabited by the Androscoggin tribe, also known as the Anasagunticooks. The term "Androscoggin" is derived from the Eastern Abenaki term "Alsskantkw," which means "a river with many grassy banks" or "a principal river."

With the influx of European settlers, the region witnessed an increase in trading and industrialization. The county's economic growth was driven by the timber and fishing industry, as well as agriculture. By the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution and the arrival of railroads paved the way for a booming textile industry. Cities like Lewiston, Auburn, and Lisbon emerged as major textile processing centers with cotton mills and shoe factories.

Throughout the 20th century, Androscoggin County experienced a shift from an industrial, manufacturing-centered economy to a more diversified one, with retail, education, and healthcare now among the region's key industries. Today, the county is home to about 108,000 residents, with Lewiston and Auburn being its two primary urban centers.

Here's a fun fact about Androscoggin County: Lewiston, the county's largest city, hosts the annual Great Falls Balloon Festival, which is one of the largest hot-air balloon festivals in the Northeast featuring over 20 hot-air balloons, drawing thousands of visitors every August.
