Aroostook County, located in the northeastern part of Maine, is the largest county in the state and has a rich and diverse history. It was established on March 16, 1839, and was named after a Mi'kmaq word, "Ulhaustoke," meaning "beautiful river." The area is traditionally the ancestral homeland of the Mi'kmaq and Maliseet tribes, who settled along the St. John River and its tributaries.

The first European settlers were French Acadians who arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s. English-speaking settlers followed in the first half of the 19th century, starting with lumberjacks who came to exploit the region's abundant forests. These settlers were attracted to the fertile soil and vast forests, mostly composed of spruce and fir trees.

Aroostook County has also been the site of several boundary disputes, including the Aroostook War, an undeclared and bloodless conflict in the 1830s between the United States and Britain over the international boundary between Maine and New Brunswick. The dispute was finally resolved by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842, which established the present-day border between Maine and Canada.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Aroostook County became an agricultural powerhouse, especially in the production of potatoes. Maine's vast, flat fields allowed the region to become one of the largest potato producers in the country, earning it the nickname "America's Breadbasket." These farmlands still account for a significant portion of Maine's potato production today.

A fun fact about Aroostook County is that it is often referred to as "The Crown of Maine," owing to its geographic location in the state as well as its beautiful and expansive landscape, which includes forests, rivers, lakes, and mountains. The region also offers various outdoor recreational activities, such as skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and hiking, drawing visitors to its natural beauty year-round.
