Cumberland County is located in the southern part of the great state of Maine, USA. Established on November 1, 1760, from parts of York County, it was named after William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, the son of King George II of Great Britain. It is the most populous county in Maine, with its county seat in the city of Portland.

The area was first explored by the Europeans in the early 16th century, with settlers arriving in the region in the early 17th century. The first permanent English settlement within the Cumberland County boundary was Casco, established in 1630. Early industries in the region included lumber mills, shipbuilding, farming, and fisheries, which all contributed to the growth of the county.

The city of Portland, the largest in the county, played a vital role during the American Revolution, being a center for naval and militia operations. However, it experienced significant damage in the 1775 Burning of Falmouth, when British forces attacked the town. Portland was rebuilt and, over time, became a major commercial hub in the region, partly due to its strategic port location.

Throughout the 19th century, the county continued to grow. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s boosted economic opportunities and population growth, with Cumberland County becoming a hub for manufacturing and trade.

Today, the region maintains its rich historical heritage and is known for its picturesque landscapes, quaint towns, gorgeous coastline, and thriving arts scene.

Fun Fact: Cumberland County, Maine is home to the iconic Portland Head Light, which is the oldest lighthouse in the state, having been completed in 1791 under the directive of George Washington. This picturesque landmark attracts visitors from around the world and is an enduring symbol of Maine's maritime history.
