Franklin County is located in the western part of the great state of Maine, in the New England region of the United States. Established on May 9, 1838, the county was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, one of America's founding fathers and an influential figure in American history. The county seat is Farmington, which has been considered the economic and cultural center of the county for many years.

The area was originally inhabited by the Abenaki tribe, an Algonquian-speaking people who were part of a larger Native American population in the Northeast. European settlers arrived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, attracted to the region's natural resources like timber and fertile farmland. The area grew as sawmills and gristmills were established along the waterways, and the population continued to grow with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century.

One of the unique features of Franklin County is its abundance of natural beauty, including the High Peaks region of Maine, which is home to Sugarloaf and Saddleback, two of the state's tallest mountain peaks. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a range of activities like hiking, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, and mountain biking throughout the year.

Fun fact: Franklin County is actually renowned for its gemstones, particularly tourmaline. Mount Mica in Paris, Maine was the first site where tourmaline was discovered in the United States in 1820, and since then, more than 63 different species of minerals have been found in the region. This has earned Franklin County the nickname "Gem of the Maine Highlands."
